A fire pump may run for only a few hours in its entire working life. Yet when a sprinkler or hydrant system calls for water, that pump must start within seconds — after months or even years of sitting idle. This paradox is why standards such as NFPA 20 and GB 50974 devote so many clauses not to the pump itself, but to the equipment that starts, protects and periodically exercises it: the fire pump control cabinet and the automatic inspection cabinet.
The control cabinet is the brain of the fire pump room. Depending on motor size and local code, it starts the pump direct-on-line, star-delta or via soft starter, and it must do so under the worst possible conditions: mains voltage sagging, the building evacuated, and zero time for troubleshooting.
